Amazon S3 Internet outage unleashes flood of apologies — from others

While Amazon Web Services hasn’t yet issued an apology via its social media channels regarding big problems today with its Simple Storage Service (S3), the company’s customers have turned to Twitter and Facebook to apologize to their own customers — while pointing the finger at AWS.

AWS, via its @awscloud Twitter account, did alert customers that “S3 is experiencing high error rates. We are working hard on recovering.” That was posted a bit after 2pm EST and Amazon has since posted a few updates, including a note about the status dashboard recovering.

Cloud companies are eyeing cell services, Nokia CEO says

BARCELONA — Enterprises and cloud companies will start trying their hands at cellular this year, Nokia president and CEO Rajeev Suri predicts.

“Enhanced reality” and events such as concerts may be where cloud giants first get into mobile services, Suri said at a Nokia event here on the eve of Mobile World Congress.

“The first webscale players will enter the wireless access domain with mainstream technologies,” Suri said. Webscale usually refers to operators of big clouds, like Google, Facebook, and Alibaba. Suri didn’t name any names.

For enterprises, an emerging technique called network slicing will allow them to virtually run their own private services on mobile operator networks. Meanwhile, systems that bring LTE to unlicensed or shared frequencies, like LAA (Licensed Assisted Access), will also help open doors to private cellular networks. Nokia is already working with some energy utilities on these kinds of deployments, and at MWC it will join Qualcomm in demonstrating a private LTE network, Suri said.

The most cringe-worthy quotes from CEO Travis Kalanick on Uber’s sexist work culture

TwitterFacebook

Uber CEO Travis Kalanick has a history of cringe-worthy comments. Easiest example — “Boob-er” in reference to a “women on demand” service — and here’s some more

When he’s not putting his foot in his mouth, Kalanick is known for particularly aggressive business tactics, which is one of the reasons why venture capitalists have given him more than $ 13 billion in funding to build out this ride-hailing company. Chris Sacca, an investor in Uber and other tech companies, wrote in a guest post in Fortune: “He doesn’t sleep. He doesn’t lose focus. He will even forget to eat. He executes again and again, inspiring those around him to have the same passion for the end game as he does.” Read more…

Apple grabs icloud.net domain to solidify links to sync and storage service

Apple this week took administrative control of the icloud.net domain, the last notable web address it did not govern that users could have linked with its online sync and storage service.

According to WHOIS searches today, Apple acquired control of icloud.net on Tuesday.

Apple already ruled the primary top-level domains for iCloud, the cross-device, cross-OS service that stores files generated by iOS and macOS, and more importantly, synchronizes everything from Safari browser bookmarks to photographs between iPhones, iPads and Macs. Apple is on record as the owner of the domains icloud.com, icloud.org, icloud.us and icloud.eu, for example.

Hybrid ERP matures as companies develop better strategies

It’s hard to find a company that does not have some form of a hybrid (cloud and on-premise) ERP system. For most, that happened by accident. Someone in the organization bypassed IT and bought a cloud service to fill a need more quickly than they could with an on-premise solution. Salesforce.com, for example, has often been the start of a company’s march to a hybrid environment.

Cloud applications can be relatively easy, low-cost solutions, but they do introduce new complexities when they need to be integrated with on-premise ERP systems and databases, or with each other. Ensuring that cloud and on-premise systems play nice together is just one part of the hybrid challenge. Making the right decisions about what will be in the cloud and what stays in-house is the other.
